This is a well-researched book and contains an amazing amount of information and detail. I am a British Born Chinese (from Liverpool) and was very interested to read the racial prejudice Frank had to contend with and all the other details regarding the Chinese in Liverpool at that time. My family had similar experiences; my father was a laundryman.
I have to point out however, that on page 8, in 1911 there were only 29 Chinese laundries in the Manchester area (not 351).
I am the editor of ‘China Eye’ the magazine of the Society for Anglo Chinese Understanding (SACU) and have written a short review of Frank Soo’s story. The focus at this time is China’s investment in football and also the racial problems facing Chinese people, especially in the early 20th century.
I would like to reproduce the cover photograph of Frank for my article. Can you give permission or do I have to contact the Staffordshire Sentinel?
